Ozon Bank ATM

Not just an ATM — a gateway to the entire OZON ecosystem

Built and launched a full ATM experience from scratch in 3 months

I was the lead product designer for Ozon Bank ATMs:

  • Designed all user flows from scratch

  • Conducted research and usability testing

  • Covered all edge cases and error scenarios

  • Wrote clear, human-friendly error messages with an editor

  • Coordinated 3D, copy, translation, legal, and marketing teams

  • Aligned business, hardware, and software layers

  • Animated the interface to smooth out pauses and loading, making the user experience feel seamless

  • Defined the launch strategy

My challenges

This was my first time designing for ATMs — and it was nothing like I'd done before.

A modern ATM is basically a giant tablet with a 30‑inch touchscreen. The user is often in a hurry, stressed, with a queue behind them — while managing their own money.

The ATM could be anywhere — a dark alley, a bright supermarket, or outside in direct sunlight. Everything must be reliable, clear, and stress‑free for the user — especially in unusual and stressful conditions.

On top of that, the tech stack was messy: our software, the ATM hardware, and a third‑party vendor's outsourced middleware — and developers who didn't fully understand how to make it all work together. So yeah, full startup atmosphere

Strategy

I chose a strategy that can be broken down into the following hierarchy — ordered by what matters most to the user:

1. Flows – Map out all user flows and design navigation and UI elements in the most familiar way for users.

2. Copy – Even the strangest error message should never leave the user stuck. Dealing with money is stressful enough.

3. Graphics – With limited resources and long queues, cover all basic scenarios with static graphics. This set the right atmosphere and made the interface speak OZON's language.

4. UI animation & 3D graphics – As 3D artists' resources became available, we replaced static graphics with animations step by step.

5. Emotional design – Parallel to all this, I was developing the final ATM interface look and feel — combining everything we learned along the way to ship a finished product.

Master File. Speed up design by х10

I identified all basic and recurring screen types: PIN entry, loading states, personal account, operation screens (withdrawal, deposit, etc.), status screens, ATM interaction screens (take your card, take your cash, insert cash), and error screens.

With the master file, I could control settings for every screen and add new ones without redrawing hundreds of layouts — keeping full consistency and adding new features or components without breaking existing flows.

It also made it easy to manage graphics and banners.

This gave me incredible control over the project and sped up the design process by 10x.

Graphics

With limited resources and long queues, there was no time for heavy 3D. I covered all basic scenarios with static graphics. This conveyed the service's atmosphere and made the interface speak OZON's language — without making users wait.

Dark UI. Сalmer, cleaner, seamless

Instead of a white interface, I chose black.

White screens are bright and uncomfortable for the eyes — especially when ATMs are often placed in dark corners of shopping malls. A black interface feels calmer, more contrast, and less tiring.

Black also simplifies the interface — it removes unnecessary borders and panels, making the UI cleaner. Nothing distracts the user from their task.

I also wanted the interface to visually blend into the device — the screen has black bezels, so a dark UI makes the whole ATM look like one seamless product. No extra padding, no visual noise. Just a clean, solid object

UI Animation. Smoothing the experience

I designed interface animations not just for looks — but to hide loading time and smooth out awkward pauses.

In a stressful ATM environment, every second of silence feels like an error. Subtle motion makes the experience feel responsive and human.

Emotional design

I wanted the ATM to feel calm and trustworthy — not just functional.

Good interaction design reduces anxiety. Clear feedback, smooth animations, and human‑friendly copy all work together to make the experience feel safe — even when something goes wrong.

I also made sure the device and the interface felt like one cohesive product. No separation between hardware and software. Just a seamless, solid experience.

Key features I designed

  • Authorization & PIN management

  • QR entry — authenticate via the mobile app

  • ATM control via the app (select operation on phone, complete on ATM)

  • Cash withdrawal

  • Cash deposit

  • ATM map

  • Full error coverage with human‑friendly copy

  • Home screen with promotional banner

  • Video production guidelines

  • Unified master file for all screens (PIN, loading, operations, status, hardware interactions, errors)
